Para un ciclo normal de 28 días, que empieza el primer día del período, la ovulación tiene lugar, generalmente, el día 14. Sin embargo, para un ciclo de 24, ocurre el día 10.

Recuerde que el óvulo es fértil sólo durante 12 a 24 horas después de su liberación. El esperma, por su parte, puede vivir hasta 72 horas dentro de la vagina después del acto sexual.

Para saber cuándo comienza a ovular, tómese la temperatura todos los días, antes de levantarse, con un termómetro especial denominado termómetro basal. Cuando la temperatura suba de 2 a 3 líneas en este (de 37,2 a 37,5) significa que la ovulación ha comenzado .

Igualmente, preste atención a la mucosidad vaginal. Se vuelve menos densa, resbalosa, transparente y abundante justo antes de la ovulación.

También puede hacer uso de un sistema para predecir la ovulación. Este analiza la orina con el fin de identificar la hormona luteinizante (LH), responsable de la liberación de los óvulos cada mes. El sistema le dirá si el índice de LH está aumentando.
