El día que llegué a una de las tantas reuniones a la casa de adopción en donde mi esposo y yo llevábamos seis meses haciendo papeles para tener un hijo, vi un letrero que decía: “Bienvenidos papitos”. Pregunté: “¿Hay una reunión de padres hoy?” Me dijeron: “Sí, la de ustedes”.
Llevábamos seis meses en el proceso y muchos años intentando tener un hijo biológico, y por primera vez un cartel me decía que yo sería mamá.
Me habían hablado de cómo se generaría el vínculo; en el taller me explicaron cómo manejar el tema. Pero, ¿sentirme mamá?
El embarazo virtual no existe. Yo me había comido el cuento de que debía esperar a mi futuro hijo adoptivo con la misma ilusión que una madre lo tiene en su vientre. Mentiras, ni lo sentí ni me dio patadas, ni me trasnochó ni me dieron vómitos o antojos; tampoco me engordé. Nadie me acarició la barriga y nunca tuve la posibilidad de verlo en ecografías.
Por eso, cuando lo tuve en mis brazos por primera vez, el 24 de noviembre de 2000, se me secó la boca.
Tampoco se parecía a mí ni a mi esposo. Era regordete, pequeñito y con dos ojos azules del color de una piscina. En ninguna de las dos familias hay ojos claros.
Me sentí distinta la primera noche. Lo miré para detallarlo por completo. Acurrucada en el corral, lo vi dormir sin sobresaltos.
Yo tenía miedo. El miedo de quererlo, de aprender a conocerlo, de sentir ese amor que dicen las mamás que se percibe desde las entrañas y esa conexión con el cordón umbilical. No sentía nada, solo el afán de cuidar a un bebé que me habían puesto en los brazos 24 horas antes y necesitaba tetero, baño, cuidado, pañales.
Eso hice. ¿Pero cuándo llegaría la conexión? Un día después, entre visitas, cansancio, trasnocho y miedo, nos quedamos solos en el cuarto mientras le daba tetero. Me miró largamente. Tenía solo dos meses. Me miró con curiosidad, fijamente; en ese momento sentí la poderosa necesidad de protegerlo.
Dos días después me sonrió. Un mes más tarde ya me estiraba los brazos para cargarlo. Yo me enamoré de ese regordete, un amor que ha ido in crescendo durante 11 años.
Con la verdad
Hemos sido sinceros desde un principio. Su curiosidad también ha ido en aumento, sus preguntas han sido distintas en cada etapa de su crecimiento. Es normal, según me ha explicado la psicóloga de Fana (donde lo adopté). Mi hijo sabe desde sus primeros años que no soy su mamá biológica. He tratado, en cada momento de la vida, de explicarle su origen y me he encargado siempre de darle la seguridad de que soy incondicionalmente su mamá.
A los dos años seguí la orientación de la psicóloga. Le expliqué que mi barriga, como uno de sus juguetes, se había dañado y que una señora en otra barriga lo tuvo nueve meses. Que además decidió darlo en adopción porque lo amaba y quería darle un hogar que ella no podía.
Más adelante vinieron preguntas más complicadas. Una, por ejemplo, cuando me preguntó en el desayuno de domingo: “¿Mami, yo tenía otro nombre cuando estaba en la casa de adopción?” Le contesté con la verdad. Siempre lo he hecho.
Tuve que llevarlo a la casa de adopción por recomendación de la psicóloga. Tal vez él, tan perspicaz, ya se estaba armando toda una película en su cabeza. Había que aclararle que nadie lo había dejado abandonado, y que por el contrario lo habían cuidado durante sus dos primeros meses en sala cunas bien adaptadas, con personal especializado y las 24 horas del día.
Sus preguntas han subido de calibre. Es normal, dice la psicóloga. El tema del abandono, por ejemplo, es algo que le causa dolor; nuestra tarea es demostrarle, con amor, que es nuestro hijo, lo amamos y no lo abandonaremos jamás; pero, sobre todo, que la decisión de su mamá biológica no tuvo que ver con abandono sino con la falta de posibilidades y la decisión de entregarlo a quienes no tenían una opción biológica para conformar una familia y querían ser padres.
Mi hijo se siente seguro; sin embargo, el duelo es parte de su vida. También hemos recibido apoyo profesional para manejar el tema. Sabemos que un niño adoptado afronta su situación de diferentes maneras. En cada etapa de la vida su percepción es distinta, según la madurez que va alcanzando.
El nuestro es un niño que va adelante en las preguntas, por lo que debemos consultar permanentemente.
Mi experiencia me ha dicho que siempre debo contestarle con la verdad y con todo mi amor.
El vínculo que hemos generado es total. No creo que el amor filial tenga que ver con códigos genéticos ni tipos de sangre. De hecho, el niño tiene un tipo de sangre diferente al de nosotros, sus padres.
La relación se ha construido con el tiempo, con nuestra dedicación, bajo la estricta condición de nuestro amor incondicional, como el de cualquier familia, y con la claridad de que es un niño en formación, al que debemos guiarlo para que sea, sobre todo, feliz. Él sabe que es nuestra felicidad.
